A one-piece ostomy system combines the pouch and skin barrier into a single unit, while a two-piece system uses a separate pouch and skin barrier that connect together. With a one-piece system, the entire pouching system is applied and removed as one piece.
With a two-piece system, the pouch can be detached from the skin barrier without removing the barrier from the skin, depending on the product design. Two-piece pouches and barriers must be compatible with each other, so flange size, coupling style, pouch type, barrier shape, and other product specifications should be reviewed carefully before ordering.
