Ostomy bags are available in several styles, including drainable, closed-end, urostomy, and high-output pouches, as well as one-piece and two-piece pouching systems. The appropriate style depends on the type of ostomy, the consistency and amount of output, and how the pouching system is designed to be emptied or changed.
In a one-piece system, the ostomy bag and skin barrier are combined into one unit. In a two-piece system, the bag attaches to a separate compatible skin barrier. Drainable pouches can be emptied through an opening at the bottom, closed-end pouches are removed for disposal, and urostomy pouches have a drainable outlet designed for urine.
