An external catheter fits outside the body to collect urine, while a Foley catheter is inserted into the bladder for continuous urine drainage. External catheters are used for external urine collection, while Foley catheters are indwelling internal catheters.
Unlike a Foley catheter, an external catheter does not stay inside the bladder or use a retention balloon. These catheter types are designed for different methods of urinary management and product use.
