An external catheter works by fitting outside the body to collect urine and direct it into a drainage bag or collection system. It does not enter the bladder or remain inside the urethra.
This makes external catheters different from Foley catheters, which stay in place inside the bladder, and intermittent catheters, which are inserted temporarily and then removed. External catheters are designed for external urine collection rather than internal drainage.
