An external catheter is a urinary catheter that fits outside the body to collect urine. Unlike internal catheters, it does not stay in the bladder or pass through the urethra.
External catheters are one of the main types of urinary catheters and are typically connected to a drainage bag or other collection system. They are different from intermittent catheters, which are inserted temporarily, and Foley catheters, which remain in place for continuous drainage.
