A Foley catheter is used to provide continuous urine drainage from the bladder. It is an indwelling catheter that stays in place and drains urine into a collection bag.
Foley catheters are used when ongoing bladder drainage is needed rather than temporary drainage after each use. This makes them different from intermittent catheters, which are removed after bladder emptying, and external catheters, which collect urine outside the body.
