A Foley catheter works by draining urine from the bladder through a tube that stays in place for continuous use. A small balloon near the tip is inflated after placement to help hold the catheter in the bladder.
Once in place, the catheter allows urine to flow into a drainage bag for collection. This makes Foley catheters different from intermittent catheters, which are removed after each use, and external catheters, which are worn outside the body.
