Catheters work by providing a way for urine to drain from the bladder when normal urination is not possible or needs support. The way a catheter works depends on the type being used.
Intermittent catheters are inserted temporarily to empty the bladder and then removed, Foley catheters remain in place for continuous drainage into a collection bag, and external catheters fit outside the body to collect urine without internal insertion. Each type is designed for a different method of urinary drainage and product use.
