Intermittent catheters are designed for temporary use and are removed after the bladder is drained. They are not intended to remain in place for continuous use.
This differs from indwelling (Foley) catheters, which stay in place, and external catheters, which are worn outside the body. Intermittent catheters are used only as needed for bladder emptying.
